چکیده

This paper concentrates on comparing the relative expressive power of ve non-monotonic logics that have appeared in the literature. The results on the computational complexity of these logics suggest that these logics have very similar expressive power that exceeds that of classical monotonic logic. A reened classiication of non-monotonic logics by their expressive power can be obtained using translation functions that satisfy additional requirements such as faithfulness and modularity used by Gottlob. Basically, we adopt Gottlob's framework for our analysis, but propose a weaker notion of faithfulness. A surprising result is deduced in light of Gottlob's results: Moore's autoepistemic logic is less expressive than Reiter's default logic and Marek and Truszczyyski's strong autoepistemic logic. The expressive power of priority logic by Wang et al. is also analyzed and shown to coincide with that of default logic. Finally, we present an exact classiication of the non-monotonic logics under consideration in the framework proposed in the paper.

Epistemic Semantics for Fixed-Points Non-Monotonic Logics

1 I N T R O D U C T I O N Exist ing nonmonotonic logics can be divided roughly into two kinds. One is based on fixed points, like default logic [Reiter 1980] or autoepistemic logic ([Moore 1983], [Konolige 1988], and [Levesque 1989]). The other is based on minimal models, like circumscription ( [McCarthy 1980, 1984] and [Lifschitz 1987]) or minimal knowledge ([Halpern and Moses 1984], [Shoham 1...

A The Complexity of Reasoning for Fragments of Autoepistemic Logic

Non-monotonic logics are among the most important calculi in the area of knowledge representation and reasoning. Autoepistemic logic, introduced 1985 by Moore [Moore 1985], is one of the most prominent non-monotonic logics. It was originally created to overcome difficulties present in the non-monotonic modal logics proposed by McDermott and Doyle [McDermott and Doyle 1980], but was also shown t...

Querying Disjunctive Database Through Nonmonotonic Logics

Query languages for retrieving information from disjunctive databases are an interesting open area of research. In this paper we study the expressive power of major non-monotonic formalisms { such as circumscription, default logic, autoepis-temic logic and some logic programming languages { used as query languages over disjunctive databases. For this aim, we deene the semantics of query express...

A Survey on Complexity Results for Non-monotonic Logics

This paper surveys the main results appeared in the literature on the computational complexity of non-monotonic inference tasks. We not only give results about the tractability/intractability of the individual problems but we also analyze sources of complexity and explain intuitively the nature of easy/hard cases. We focus mainly on non-monotonic formalisms, like default logic, autoepistemic lo...

The Complexity of Circumscription in Description Logic

As fragments of first-order logic, Description logics (DLs) do not provide nonmonotonic features such as defeasible inheritance and default rules. Since many applications would benefit from the availability of such features, several families of nonmonotonic DLs have been developed that are mostly based on default logic and autoepistemic logic. In this paper, we consider circumscription as an in...
